What is IELTS?

What is IELTS?

The international English language testing system (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration, with over 2 million tests taken in the last year.
IELTS assesses all of your English skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking, and is designed to reflect how you will use English at study, at work, and at play, in your new life abroad.
The IELTS test is developed by some of the world’s leading experts in language assessment. It has an excellent international reputation, and is accepted by over 8,000 organisations worldwide, including schools, universities, employers, immigration authorities and professional bodies.
IELTS is the most widely accepted English language test that uses a one-on-one speaking test to assess your English communication skills. This means that you are assessed by having a real-life conversation with a real person. This is the most effective and natural way of testing your English conversation skills.
You can take IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training – depending on the organisation you are applying to and your plans for the future.
Whatever your reason for taking IELTS, make the most of your language skills.

Importance of IELTS

Everybody interested in overseas study or immigration and in some cases while applying for international jobs, may be required to undergo an IELTS test. The IELTS score is required to get admission into many renowned universities across the world and a majority of immigration destinations demand their applicants to take IELTS test in order to qualify for the eligibility criteria. In fact, in certain immigration programs, such as Australia General Skilled Migration program, both the principal applicant and their spouse are required to appear for the IELTS test.
The IELTS test serves as a perfect medium to evaluate your language benchmark and in many cases; help the applicants find adept employment opportunities for themselves. Ace English language skills have always been one of the major selection criteria as far as the eligibility factor under the point based system is concerned. IELTS score of an immigrant applicant offers an opportunity for the immigration officers to judge the applicants for their English language skills. History says that earlier the immigration officers used to take a face-to-face interview with the applicants and come to a final judgment. But the system had many loopholes and the outcome usually resulted into prejudiced situations. This test, further allows the immigration officer to judge the candidate on the basis of all the required four skill such as understanding power, reading abilities, speaking skills and listening capabilities. This was not possible with the earlier concept of “one-on-one interview”. Keeping all these things in mind, the concept of IELTS Test was introduced.
IELTS test holds an international acceptability, so its importance is automatically highlighted. An IELTS test is an integral part and one of the most critical aspects of almost all the immigration processes such as Study Visa, General Skilled Migration program amongst others. In addition, this test gives the applicants (applying for Study Visa) a polished opportunity to check on their language skill levels and apply for a particular course in accordance with their rankings. This also means that if the applicant manages to achieve the target score, it will provide ample confidence to the applicant and his college about his brilliant eligibility level.

IELTS Writing

  IELTS Writing

IELTS Writing (Academic)

IELTS tests candidates’ ability to produce two quite different pieces of writing in a fairly short period of time. The test is divided into two parts and candidates are allowed 60 minutes to complete both parts.
IELTS Writing Task 1
In the first part, candidates will be given a task based on some information, presented in graphic and diagrammatic form. Candidates are expected to write a descriptive report of at least 150 words on the information provided.
IELTS Writing Task 2
In the second task, candidates are assessed on their ability to produce a clear and logical argument on a given topic. Most of the topics are of general interest to, suitable for and easily understood by students at undergraduate or postgraduate level. Candidates will have to write at least 250 words and, as Task 2 is longer than Task 1, it is suggested that about 40 minutes is spent on this task and 20 minutes on the first task.

IELTS Writing (General)

The IELTS General Training Writing test takes 60 minutes. Candidates have to complete two tasks, of 150 and 250 words, as in the Academic module. However, Task 1 is always a letter, while Task 2 is an essay based on a given topic. The topics of the questions will be of general interest, and no specialist knowledge is required. For example, topics can include travel, accommodation, current affairs, shops and services, health and welfare, health and safety, recreation, social and physical environment.
IELTS Writing Task 1
In Task 1, candidates are asked to write a letter which may need to be semi-formal or formal in tone in response to a given problem or situation. Candidates will be asked to include information relating to three bullet points in the question. Candidate answers should be at least 150 words in length for this task.
IELTS Writing Task 2
In Task 2, candidates are asked to discuss a topic in response to a statement which presents a particular point of view, argument or issue. The task requires candidates to write a discursive piece of writing in which the question will typically ask them to discuss factual information, discuss a problem and present solutions, evaluate ideas or justify opinions. Candidate answers for Task 2 should be at least 250 words in length.

IELTS Listening

  IELTS Listening

In IELTS the listening comprehension is designed to assess your ability to understand spoken English and is the same for all candidates. There is a pre-recorded tape which lasts for about thirty minutes. There is a total of about forty questions. There are four sections in the test. Each section may contain two or three linked passages of two to three minutes each, or one longer passage of about five minutes. The passages get more difficult as you progress through the tape.
The earlier sections use situations in which you may find yourself on first arriving in an English-speaking country, when you need 'survival English'. These include finding your way around, following directions, giving and taking down information, making arrangements etc. Section 1 is always in the form of a dialogue between two or more speakers, while section 2 is a talk or some information given by one person at a time.
In the later sections the topics usually concern education and training. Here you may have to do the kind of thing you will need to do in an academic environment - listen to pre-recorded information, listen to lectures, pick out relevant key information from a dialogue and so on. Again, section 3 is a dialogue or discussion, while section 4 is a single voice giving a talk or lecture.
So you will hear monologues and dialogues. You will hear male voices and female voices. You will also hear a variety of accents. You will hear the passages once only, as in most situations in real life.
You are given a booklet. This contains all the instructions and questions with space to write your answers.
As in the reading test, there is a wide range of question types. Much of this may be in the form of graphics, such as tables. This applies also to multiple-choice questions, where you may have to choose between a number of pictures or mark a point on a plan. Spelling is important, especially where it is clear from the tape that accuracy is required, such as filling in important details on an application form. Errors in spelling and grammar are only accepted on very uncommon words. Answers require notes, letters or numbers rather than complete sentences.
You will be given time to check your answers between sections, and at the end of the test, as well as time to read the questions before each section. Instructions are recorded on the tape. They are clear and you are sometimes given examples of what you have to do. At the end of the test you are given ten minutes to transfer your answers to an answer sheet.
You are listening with a purpose - to identify what the question requires, find the information efficiently and answer accurately. It is not necessary to understand every word that isspoken.
Since you will hear the information once only, it is particularly important that you prepare yourself properly before you listen and anticipate what you will hear. You must read the question, understand it, follow the recording, recognise the answer and write it down - so you must use the time you are given to read the questions before each section to build up an idea of what the recording will be about, the topic, the situation and the characters.
You must know what specific information you are listening for: is it a time or a place, a fact or an attitude, for example. This means you must analyse the questions to find out what information you are listening for and read the instructions carefully. Then you can listen for key words and phrases. Don't worry if you don't understand everything - you should try to guess the meaning from the context.
Remember you must write your answers down as you hear them, but keep listening for the answer to the next question while you are writing. This will be easier if you have analysed the questions properly before listening.
Finally, check your answers. You are given a short time at the end of each section and at the end of the test to check your answers. Look over your answers - and make sure you have followed the instructions correctly.

IELTS Reading

  IELTS Reading

To improve your performance in the Reading test you need to practise reading a variety of English texts. This will help you develop the ability to read quickly as is required under test conditions.
The texts included in the Reading test always contain the information you need to answer the question. You won’t have to use your own knowledge of a topic.
You need to do either the General IELTS exam or the Academic IELTS exam. But what's the difference, anyway? The difference is in the Reading and Writing modules only. The Listening and Speaking modules are the same for all.
In terms of reading, the main difference between the Academic and General Reading Modules of the IELTS lies in the content of the passages. The General Module includes easier texts from social, academic, and work contexts. The Academic Module includes more advanced texts, at an undergraduate or graduate level, from academic sources.
Yet, the Academic and General Reading Modules are also similar in many ways. Both last for one hour, contain 3 passages and 40 questions, and are scored in the same way. In both cases, you must answer the questions and transfer your answers to the answer sheet all in one hour. Other overlapping areas that apply to both modules are scoring, tasks, skills, and time.

General Reading

Section 1 contains two or three short factual texts, one of which may be composite (consisting of 6-8 short texts related by topic, e.g. hotel advertisements). Topics are relevant to everyday life in an English-speaking country
Section 2 contains two short factual texts focusing on work-related issues (e.g. applying for jobs, company policies, pay and conditions, workplace facilities, staff development and training)
Section 3 contains one longer, more complex text on a topic of general interest
Texts are authentic and are taken from notices, advertisements, company handbooks, official documents, books, magazines and newspapers.

IELTS READING - SCORING

In both the General and Academic Reading Modules, one mark is awarded for each correct answer. A special table converts the scores out of 40 into a band score on the IELTS band scale. You may receive a whole band or a half band. Your overall score is the average of the band scores you receive in the four modules. This final score itself may be represented as a whole band or a half band.

IELTS Speaking

IELTS SPEAKING

The speaking test is an interview which assesses how well you can communicate in spoken English. It is a test of general speaking skills and is broadly the same for all candidates. The interview lasts for eleven to fourteen minutes and is in three main sections:
The first part is on familiar topics such as your work or study experience, your family or home culture and your interests or hobbies.
This is followed by a part where you are asked to talk on a particular topic for one to two minutes. You are given a card which states what you should talk about and you are given one minute to prepare. At the end of your one to two minutes the examiner may ask you one or two questions before moving on to the third part of the test.
The final part is an extension of the part 2 topic to a more abstract discussion of related issues.
You are assessed on your ability to communicate fluently, clearly (i.e. with clear pronunciation) and accurately using appropriate grammar and vocabulary. Your fluency is being assessed so it is important to say as much as you can as well as to speak spontaneously and not to learn what you are going to say. If the examiner thinks you are giving a prepared answer he or she will quickly change the question. Throughout the speaking test, the examiners will ask the questions and control the timing and the move from one part to another. The interview will be recorded. This is to make sure the interviewers and band scores are consistent in all IELTS centres.

Practice

The only way to improve your fluency is by getting a lot of practice in speaking. Be confident. Think about what you want to say. Of course you should try to get your English right, but do not worry too much about getting everything absolutely correct. The important thing is that you should speak and listen, that you should engage in an extended interview with the examiner and that you should enjoy using your English to communicate with an English speaker.

IELTS SPEAKING - SCORING

In the last few years, thanks to jobs becoming global, the importance of English has increased manifold. It has over the years become an important medium of communication, both at the international and intra-national levels. The importance of spoken English is even more, because there are many cases where one knows his subject well, but fails to communicate it properly. The practice of spoken English, therefore, is quite essential. Learning English in a country where it is not a native language, opens a number of opportunities for the individual. The language of the corporate world is English. An individual can make strides in the management ladder if he/she can speak English fluently. If your English is poor, even though with brilliant business ideas, you may still find yourself languishing at the bottom of the management ladder. Your productivity will drop over a period of time since you will find difficulty in expressing your brilliant ideas. Those who can speak good English will probably usurp your ideas and get the credit for all the hard work you did to get the idea working.
Specially designed workshops at IELTS Guru help students and professionals shape their successful career.
